Wrexham Tennis Centre ready to host AEGON Junior International
Wrexham Tennis Centre will be hosting another high standard event for junior players from across Europe between 8th and 14th December. The AEGON Junior International Under 14’s event will begin on Saturday 8th December, with the main draw commencing on Monday 10th December and the finals taking place on Friday 14th December. Play will start at approximately 9am each day and is scheduled to run well into the evening throughout the week.
The Tennis Europe Junior Tour was created in 1990 and has long been the platform of choice for the launch of a successful tennis career for many young players. In recent years this event has heralded the arrival of such top players as Justine Henin, Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, Andy Murray, Dinara Safina, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Maria Sharapova, to name but a few.
The under 14 players will compete in the boys and girls singles competitions throughout the week where the majority of the main consists of British players in both categories.
Last years event saw young stars from all over the UK and Ireland, along with players from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Holland and Russia come to Wrexham to compete against some of the best junior players on the circuit. There was also some local success as Chloe Hughes, who trains at the Wrexham Academy, won the Girls Consolation Final, beating Jodie Anna Burrage in three sets (2-4 4-2 4-0). Chloe followed this success with a highly promising doubles tournament, reaching the semi – finals with Lauren Dowling (GBR) as her partner on the court.
The Girls Singles final was won by fifth seed Georgina Axon (GBR) who beat fellow Brit, Anastasia Mikheeva 6-4 6-4. The Boys Singles title went to another British born tennis player. Sixth seed Jay Clarke claimed the crown after beating Cypriot and number one seed Andreas Aravis, repeating the girls score of 6-4 6-4.
Wrexham will also be hoping for some local success in this year’s event as promising tennis stars take to the court. Elin Anderson, Tom Thelwell-Jones and Llewellyn Bevan will all looking to impress at the pre-tournament training camp taking place at Wrexham in the build up to the event, with Adam Jones ready to show his talent and ability in the male half of the qualifiers.
